It remained uninhabited until the British established a garrison there in 1815. I had been assured that everyone spoke English but I am sure that I only understood one word in five that Fred spoke to me on the way in. Ascension Island was also discovered by the Portuguese in the early 16th century. We came ashore in one of Solomons boats with Charley Wade and Fred Hurst as crew. And you could live here for many years and still not understand them all. It is a working island only although some worker/residents have lived there for decades.
Population: 1,000 the island has never had an indigenous population and currently it is not possible to own land or a business there. Over many generations St Helena has developed its own patois which we refer to as Saint or Saint-speak. In 2015 events were held to celebrate the Bicentenary of British settlement. If you are identified as a visitor everyone will speak to you in good English, but if you hear a group of Saints talking amongst themselves you may find it hard to follow what they are saying. Ascension is known for its label as one of the most remote places in the world, sitting in the middle of the South Atlantic with the nearest dry land roughly 1,300 km² (800 miles), the Island can be easily considered a tiny far-away part of Britain.
